Lifetime of a transient atmosphere produced by lunar volcanism

چکیده
Early in the Moon's history volcanic outgassing may have produced a periodic millibar level atmosphere (Needham and Kring 2017). We examined relevant atmospheric escape processes lifetime of such an atmosphere. Thermal rates were calculated as function mass for range temperatures including effect presence light constituent H2. Photochemical sputtering using estimates higher EUV plasma fluxes consistent with early Sun. The often used surface Jeans calculation carried out Vondrak (1974) is not applicable scale composition considered. show that solar driven non-thermal can remove CO on order ~1 Myr if average exobase temperature below ~350–400 K. However, UV/EUV absorption heats upper to > ~ 400 K thermal increasingly dominates loss rate, we estimated minimum 100's years considering energy limited escape.

Lunar Volcanism in Space and Time
Lunar volcanic deposits are dominated by areally extensive mare units occurring in regionally low areas predominantly on the lunar near side. Data obtained from lunar orbit and earth-based observations have been used to extend the detailed characterizations derived from Apollo and Luna sample return missions to other parts of the moon. Mare volcanism occurred over a period of about 1.3 billion ...
متن کاملThe Lunar Atmosphere and Its Study by Lro
Current Understanding: The atmosphere of the Moon is extremely tenuous, with a total mass of only ~10 kg (i.e., at STP it would fit inside a large building) [1]. Since it is so thin, the lunar atmosphere is difficult to detect, and has only been partially sampled in situ on the nightside by Apollo pressure gauges & mass spectrometers (these were swamped by contamination on the dayside) [2]. Lik...
متن کاملLunar cryptomaria: Physical characteristics, distribution, and implications for ancient volcanism
Cryptomaria, lunar volcanic deposits obscured by crater and basin impact ejecta, can provide important information about the thermal and volcanic history of the Moon. The timing of cryptomare deposition has implications for the duration and flux of mare basalt volcanism. In addition, knowing the distribution of cryptomaria can provide information about mantle convection and lunar magma ocean so...
متن کاملLunar Volcanism: Factors Controlling Intrusion Geometries and Eruption
Introduction: Partial melting occurs in planetary bodies due to (1) temperature rise as heat is produced from radioisotope decay; or decompression as parts of the mantle rise due to (2) thermal convection or (3) overturn driven by compositional instability. Case (1) dominated early-forming differentiated asteroids heated by short half-life isotopes [1, 2] but is not relevant to the Moon. There ...
متن کاملQuadrantids and the lunar Na atmosphere
Enhancements of the Na emission and temperature from the lunar atmosphere were reported during the Leonids meteor showers of 1995, 1997 and 1998. Here we report a search for similar enhancement during the 1999 Quadrantids, which have the highest mass flux of any of the major streams. No enhancements were detected. We suggest that different chemical-physical properties of the Leonid and Quadrant...
